Tony Vaux was involved in the development of Strategic Conflict Assessment led by Jonathan Goodhand for DFID. This method is set out in the 2002 DFID publication 'Conducting Conflict Assessments - Guidance Notes' at dfid.gov.uk.
Since 2002, the method has been applied in many countries including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Balkans, DRC, Georgia, Kenya, Moldova, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Sudan. The method has been adapted for a participatory process as well as the more conventional approach using expert teams. It has been used not only as an input into strategy and planning, as orginally intended, but also for developing conflict-sensitive principles for aid, evaluation and, most recently, 'conflict audit'.
The following paper provides a simple explanation of the way SCA can be adapted for these other purposes.
